Blast from the past (no pun intended)
Since the publication of the Unabomber’s manifesto, the technology scare paper of Ted Kaczynski, some people have found themselves quietly speaking the unspeakable: The Unabomber makes some good points when he raves against technology.
The Unabomber has been blamed for 16 mail bombings since 1978 but his essay, Industrial Society and its Future, was published in a special eight-page section of The Washington Post (1997) in response to the bomber’s demands. I read it in 1997 - the week it was published and just went through it again. It's not the quality and integrity of Bill Joy but it seems to be having a resurgence.
While in no way endorsing his violence or political extremism - in light of the latest American policies or the flack that some web filtering companies are getting - some people are saying they understand the Unabomber’s fear that technology is limiting freedom and individuality.
It's still an interesting read.
